Cosying up in comfort is one of the pleasures of winter.

By the same token, spending more time indoors brings us energetically closer to our home. We become more aware of how our surroundings make us feel.

And that opens up the chance to do some energy-boosting that will take you right through to spring …


If your energy is particularly low in winter, you might find the answer is at home, staring right back at you … in the form of a mixed-up multitude of stuff, or its more judgemental name, ‘clutter’.

Let’s just be with that for a minute or two, and see if there’s a creative solution to the chaos.

If you’re at home right now, take a moment, and let whatever you’ve just been thinking about drift away.

Now look around you. Just notice whatever fleeting feelings arise in you.

Take a few more moments to let those sensations surface. This is your internal reaction to what you’re seeing around you.

At this point, just when you’re most likely feeling a bit low about yourself, many ‘experts’ on clutter would start preaching at you: ‘Oh my, how lazy/disorganised/unfocused you are.’

Now if you find that helpful, don’t listen to me. Go ahead and clear a drawer or something. You’ll almost certainly feel better for it anyway, so it’s all good.

OK so if you’re still with me, hurray. We’re going to have a bit of fun.

Take a look at that ‘clutter’ around you. Here’s a left-field question for you: if it was a person, what kind of person would it be?

There’s no right answer, so just let your imagination loose.

How does that person move? Is there a sound that goes along with that? (I should say at this point that unless you have an easy-going family, you might want to do this alone.)


Now shape-shift into this person. Take her side. Move like her, talk like her. Really get into her skin. What’s it like to be her? Does she have a name?

Take your time, enjoy yourself, until you’re well and truly in that character.

Now imagine someone’s asking your character, hey, how shall we sort all this stuff then?

Notice how you – as this character – respond.

See if she has some advice or recommendations for you. And notice – how has your energy changed since you started this exercise?
