We all have intuition, but most of the time we don't nurture it. Our fears on the other hand get regularly stoked and reinforced, so this is the voice we hear loud and clear, unless we're consciously aware.
So how can you tell whether it's fear talking or your intuition, and how can you develop your intuition so you hear and trust it more easily?
We can define intuition as immediate insight or understanding without conscious reasoning.
Here are some tell-tale signs to differentiate it from fear:
When you’re working with a reliable intuition
• It feels like a gentle inkling, or a neutral ‘knowing’, rather than a logical idea
• You feel or hear the message instantly, and usually it’s fleeting - if you blink you’ve missed it
• The message feels definitive, as if the answer is black and white and doesn’t need analysing
• The message feels simple and ‘right’
• Nothing in you speaks against it - the message feels affirming and supportive, even expansive
• The message is centred in the present, not hooked onto anything from the past or future
When you’re dealing with an irrational fear
• It feels anxious, heavy or tense and it may even trigger physical symptoms such as a headache or tight stomach
• You feel agitated and you may feel an urge to take some action just to feel relieved
• The message can be repetitive and wearing, and you find you’re debating with yourself in circles
• It seems to have many variables and ‘what-ifs’, which leaves you feeling confused or stuck
• The message feels polarised or one-sided
• It’s usually centred around old hurts, or scenarios that haven’t happened yet

How to develop your intuition
Developing your capacity to know what feelings to trust and which to just hold in kindness takes commitment and time. There’s no quick technique which will do this for you, but it’s absolutely worth it.
Here are some suggestions and strategies to set you on a path of building inner trust:
Practise becoming more aware of and present to your body. This might include some form of meditation, such as breath awareness, mindfully drinking or eating, spending time paying kindly attention to an uncomfortable tightness somewhere in your body, or simply consciously relaxing. This will develop your awareness of important feelings which might guide you.
If you want to invite your inner guidance, you need to be in a calm and relaxed state. It’s just impossible to hear it when you’re dashing about, feeling panicky or your mind is muddled with thoughts. So slow down, begin with a quietening practice, ask your question, and then be receptive and allow plenty of time.
Experiment and reflect on the decisions you make based on intuition and what the outcome was. This trial-and-error method may not sound very appealing, but over time it will refine your connection with your inner knowing.
Befriend your fears, so that they lose their hold on you. The best way is to listen to what your fear has to say and acknowledge its presence. Usually when you do this, you’re better able to assess whether your fear has some truth to it or is mostly based on stuff that you believe, but isn’t true. When you listen to your fear without judgement it also creates more space for your intuition to speak.
It’s powerful, and very handy, to know how to separate the intuitive feeling that you can trust immediately from a fear that's not pointing you forward but just needs compassion.
Gradually and with practice, you’ll find that your habitual mode of thought is more quietly positive. This allows you to tap much more easily into your intuition and to trust the messages you receive.
